I didn’t know quite what to expect when I got a last-minute call to photograph Mike’s wedding proposal to Moriah. I usually get to know my couples pretty well before I ever stick a camera in their faces, and I only just met Mike shortly before the whole thing went down. I did get to chat with him for a few minutes and knew it was going to be great when he told me that he was going to do it in my absolute favorite neighborhood in Denver, the RiNo District, just across the street from Our Mutual Friend Brewery. This neighborhood is actually home for them and I will try hard to not let them know just how intensely jealous of them I am (but it’s pretty much my dream neighborhood). Anyway, they had their first kiss on the corner of Larimer and 28th, and Mike knew that was where he also wanted to ask Moriah to be his wife. I tried to look “natural” as I saw them come down the street and got to play paparazzi when he kissed her and then got down on one knee. I’m not a cryer so I am always caught off guard when the emotions hit me, but it was seriously so perfect. It wasn’t contrived or overdone, but it was simply connected to their love story and it was beautiful. Oh, and she totally said “yes”.
I was stoked that they were willing to spend their first hour as fiancés with me to take a few photos around the neighborhood. Moriah is so comfortable in front of the camera and it is obvious that she is an artist herself with the ideas she had and just the way that she carries herself. They are definitely one of those couples that are natural together that what they do instinctually is better than any of my posing directions. And guys – we even got to do a few photos with their Basset Hounds “Benny” and “Jelly Beans”. Gah, I could’ve photographed these two all night! Thank you Michaela (Moriah’s sister) for calling me and thank you Mike and Moriah for letting me crash your party! Congrats! – Jo
